In a dramatic turn of events, Botswana Police have recovered a consignment of copper that went missing about a week ago, along with the truck and another suspect. The copper was reportedly destined for Durban, South Africa.
The main suspect, a Zambian truck driver whose name is being withheld, was employed by a Zambian transport company. He disappeared with the haul in Botswana, sparking a manhunt.
Yesterday, 17th March 2026, the driver was finally arrested at a lodge in Dukwi village. But it’s the story of how he was caught that has everyone talking!
According to sources, the driver was hiding out at the lodge and decided to show one of his girlfriends a bag of money he had stashed in the room. After seeing the cash, the girlfriend allegedly told him to go take a shower, promising to show him “love he has never seen before.” While he was in the shower, she grabbed the bag of money and ran!
She then alerted the police, tipping them off that the wanted man was hiding at the lodge. Police swooped in and arrested him on the spot. A truck and one more suspect have also been taken into custody.
Cases of copper hijacking are extremely rare in Botswana, and it’s noted that hiding as a fugitive is tough here due to the low population.
We are still awaiting an official statement from the Botswana Police Service to confirm these unfolding details.
