Truck crash derails 14-wagon train at level crossing

A truck driver was lucky to escape unharmed after he crashed into and derailed an oncoming train at a level crossing in the Northern Cape on Tuesday.

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) said in a statement that the truck had collided with the train at the Glossam level crossing at around 08h27.

“The train was not loaded and was travelling in the direction of Hotazel from Postmasburg. The train had right of way so the road truck driver should have stopped at the level crossing to allow the train to pass but failed to do so,” TFR said.

“This resulted in the collision and derailment of the train’s three locomotives and 14 empty wagons. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. The line has since been closed for the recovery of the wreckage.”

TFR said the railway track and overhead track equipment (OHTE) had been significantly damaged during the incident.

“Prior to this morning’s incident, the line was in a good condition. TFR would like to remind road users that trains require a longer distance to stop so it is inadvisable to attempt to cross a level crossing when trains are approaching,” TFR warned.

The rail utility urged drivers to obey the rules of level crossings which always give a train right of way on the track.

“Bring your vehicle to a complete stop when approaching a level crossing. Look, listen and think. Only cross once you have ascertained that no trains are approaching,” TFR said.
